Bhuvneshwar Kumar Becomes Second Highest Wicket-Taker in IPL History

Bhuvneshwar Kumar just added another big milestone to his brilliant IPL journey. The seasoned pacer has now become the second-highest wicket-taker in Indian Premier League history, reaching 193 wickets after a superb three-wicket haul against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on 27th April.

After a rare off-day against Rajasthan Royals, Bhuvneshwar bounced back in style, delivering a match-defining spell for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He picked up 3 for 33, ripping through Delhi’s middle order with key wickets of KL Rahul, Ashutosh Sharma, and Tristan Stubbs. That spell pushed him past veteran leggie Piyush Chawla’s tally of 192 IPL wickets. Now, Bhuvneshwar is just seven shy of becoming only the second bowler after Yuzvendra Chahal (214 wickets) to hit the 200-wicket mark in the league.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Bhuvneshwar, playing his 304th T20 match, has racked up 322 wickets overall. Among Indian bowlers in T20s, only Yuzvendra Chahal, with 373 scalps, has more. Bhuvi’s numbers in T20 cricket are nothing short of outstanding — an average of 24.88, an economy rate of 7.30, five five-wicket hauls, and five four-wicket hauls under his belt.

His IPL story is pretty fascinating too. Bhuvneshwar actually started with RCB, though he never got a chance to play a game for them. He then moved to the now-defunct Pune Warriors India before finding his true home with Sunrisers Hyderabad. With SRH, he picked up 157 wickets at an average of 26.81, becoming one of their most reliable performers over the years. It’s also worth remembering that Bhuvneshwar remains the only bowler to win back-to-back Purple Caps, topping the wicket charts in 2016 and 2017.

At the IPL 2025 mega-auction, RCB splashed out ₹10.75 crore to bring him back — this time, not just as a squad player but as a key weapon. Even though he hasn’t featured for India in T20Is since 2022, Bhuvneshwar still sits fourth on India's all-time wicket-takers list in T20Is. He has 90 wickets from 87 matches at a sensational average of 19.90, behind only Arshdeep Singh (99), Yuzvendra Chahal (96), and Hardik Pandya (94).
