Karachi Kings Suffer Major Setback as Kane Williamson Ruled Out of First Five PSL 2025 Matches

Kane Williamson is set to miss the start of PSL 2025, dealing an early setback to Karachi Kings. The New Zealand star, who was picked up by the franchise in the Supplementary category, has been ruled out of the team’s first five matches due to a quad injury.

The news was confirmed by both the franchise and owner Salman Iqbal, who shared that the batter is expected to link up with the squad ahead of their sixth game — a big clash against Quetta Gladiators in Lahore. The injury was picked up during the Champions Trophy Final against India, and since then, Williamson has been keeping busy as part of the IPL 2025 commentary panel after going unsold in the Jeddah auction. While his absence is certainly a blow, the Kings will be hoping to stay competitive in the early part of the tournament before their star recruit joins the camp.  

"South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen drafted by Islamabad United in Supplementary category and New Zealand duo Mark Chapman and Kane Williamson selected in the Platinum and Supplementary categories, respectively will also be unavailable for a few matches to Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings," a PSL release confirmed earlier. 

Karachi Kings have gone through some major changes this season, with Australian opener David Warner taking charge as captain. Alongside Williamson, the Kings also have Kiwi duo Tim Seifert and Adam Milne in their ranks. After finishing fifth last year, the franchise is looking for a much-improved run this time around, and they’ll be banking on experience to get them going. 

The Kings kick off their campaign against Multan Sultans on April 12 in what will be the first double-header day of PSL 2025. They’ll be hoping to hit the ground running, even without one of their biggest names in the squad — for now.
