Rajat Patidar and Pat Cummins found themselves lighter in the pocket after their teams were penalised for slow over-rates during the recent IPL clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
While Cummins was hit with a Rs 12 lakh fine — his side’s first offence this season — Patidar, as RCB’s designated captain, was fined Rs 24 lakh. That’s because RCB had already committed a similar offence earlier in the season, back on April 7. Even though Patidar wasn’t leading the team on the field that day, IPL rules clearly state that the official skipper cops the penalty, much like Rajasthan Royals’ Sanju Samson did when Riyan Parag was stand-in captain during their breach.
“As it was his team's second offence of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Patidar was fined Rs 24 lakhs,” said the IPL in a statement. The rest of the RCB players, including the Impact Player, weren’t spared either — each fined Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever was lower. For Cummins, it was a first-time offence under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct. “As it was his team's first offence… Cummins was fined Rs 12 lakh,” the statement added.
But the real punishment for RCB came on the field. Chasing a daunting 232, set up by Ishan Kishan’s explosive 94* off 48 balls, they faltered badly. Despite brisk starts from Phil Salt (62 off 32), Virat Kohli (43 off 25), and Jitesh Sharma (24 off 15), RCB only managed 189 before getting bowled out — their first loss on the road this season.
It was a costly defeat. Not just in terms of the match fines, but also the standings. With 17 points, RCB dropped to third place on the table, behind Gujarat Titans (18) and Punjab Kings (also 17), thanks to a dented Net Run Rate. A spot in the top two — and the playoff cushion it brings — now hangs in the balance.
