Things may be going great on the field for Punjab Kings this IPL season, but behind the scenes, it’s a very different story. Bollywood actress and team co-owner Preity Zinta has taken legal action against her fellow directors Mohit Burman and Ness Wadia, filing a case in a Chandigarh court.
The dispute centers around an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on April 21, which Zinta claims was conducted improperly and in violation of procedures laid out under the Companies Act, 2013. According to Zinta, she had flagged her concerns well before the meeting in an email dated April 10, objecting to the way it was being organized. Despite this, she says the meeting went ahead with Burman at the helm and the backing of Ness Wadia.
The major point of contention was the appointment of Muneesh Khanna as a new director — a move Zinta and fellow director Karan Paul opposed during the meeting. In her legal petition, she’s asked the court to nullify the meeting altogether and prevent Khanna from acting as a director. She’s also requested that the company not be allowed to implement any decisions taken during that meeting. Zinta has gone a step further, asking the court to bar the company from holding any more board meetings or general meetings without her and Paul being present — and without Khanna taking part.
Despite the legal battle brewing in the boardroom, Zinta has remained visibly committed to the team, cheering from the stands as Punjab Kings enjoy their best season in over a decade. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the Kings have already secured a spot in the playoffs — their first appearance since 2014 — and sit in third place with 17 points from 12 games. They’re now eyeing a top-two finish.
The team’s final two league games are coming up: a clash against Delhi Capitals on Saturday (May 24) in Jaipur, followed by a showdown with Mumbai Indians on Monday (May 26).
