Setback for Gujarat Titans as Glenn Phillips Returns Home Due to Groin Injury

Just days after Kagiso Rabada left the Gujarat Titans camp due to personal reasons, the franchise has now been hit with another setback. New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2025 after suffering a groin injury.

The injury occurred during the Titans’ match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 6th April. Phillips, who had not featured in the starting XI for GT this season, came on as a substitute fielder in the fifth over. While chasing down a shot by Ishan Kishan and attempting a quick throw to the keeper’s end, Phillips pulled up in visible discomfort. He immediately clutched his groin and had to be helped off the field by team staff. Gujarat Titans later confirmed that Phillips has flown back to New Zealand for treatment. As of now, the franchise hasn’t named a replacement. 

This news comes hot on the heels of Rabada’s departure on 3rd April to tend to what the team described as an "important personal matter." There’s been no update on Rabada’s potential return either, leaving GT with just five overseas players out of the original seven they picked up at the auction. So far this season, GT have leaned heavily on the trio of Jos Buttler, Rashid Khan, and Sherfane Rutherford, all of whom have featured in every match. Afghan all-rounder Karim Janat is also available, while South African quick Gerald Coetzee continues his recovery from an injury that had already ruled him out of the SA20 and Champions Trophy earlier this year. 

Despite these setbacks, Gujarat Titans are currently sitting at the top of the IPL 2025 table with four wins in five matches. But with their overseas options rapidly thinning out, the management may need to act quickly to maintain their momentum going forward.
