South Africa Announces Squads for WTC Final 2025 vs Australia

Temba Bavuma will lead a 15-man South African squad into the ICC World Test Championship 2025 Final against Australia, with the Proteas sticking mostly with the tried and tested group that got them to Lord’s. The batting line-up looks solid and familiar, with Aiden Markram, Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, and David Bedingham all included. Kyle Verreyne has been named the first-choice wicketkeeper for the final.

There are only two changes from the squad that faced Pakistan earlier in the year. Young left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka misses out, with the experienced Lungi Ngidi making a timely return. Top-order batter Matthew Breetzke has also been left out. On the bowling front, Ngidi’s return adds a big boost to an already fiery pace attack. He’ll join Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Dane Paterson, Wiaan Mulder, and Corbin Bosch in what looks like a well-rounded fast-bowling unit. Ngidi hasn’t played a Test since October 2024, but he’s back to full fitness and was recently part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s squad during IPL 2025.

Head coach Shukri Conrad expressed confidence in the squad's balance and experience, especially for the challenge that awaits in English conditions. “Firstly, I want to congratulate each of the players selected for this squad. It is a special moment for this group to contest the WTC Final. Over the past 18 months, we’ve worked hard to build a competitive red-ball unit, and this achievement reflects that progress,” Conrad said. He added, “A key part of our success has been consistency in selection, and we’ve stuck with the core group of players who have been part of this WTC cycle. We’ve selected a balanced squad for the conditions we expect at Lord’s.”

This will be South Africa’s first appearance in a World Test Championship final, and they’ve earned it after finishing top of the standings with a point percentage of 69.44.
