Trent Boult is on his way back to India for the remainder of IPL 2025 – a massive boost for Mumbai Indians at just the right time. The Kiwi pacer has been in blistering form this season, and his return could be just what MI need as they push for a playoff spot.
Boult, 36, has been Mumbai’s go-to bowler all season. Picked up for ₹12.5 crore in last year’s mega auction, he’s lived up to every rupee. With 18 wickets to his name and an economy rate of 8.49, he’s not only MI’s leading wicket-taker but also sits joint-fourth in the tournament’s bowling charts. Boult has already delivered a handful of match-winning spells—most notably his 4 for 26 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in an away game, a performance that rightly earned him the Player-of-the-Match award. Add to that standout displays against LSG and Rajasthan Royals, and it’s clear why MI were so keen to get him back.
Mumbai Indians will resume their campaign against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede on May 21, and having Boult back in the XI should give them a serious edge. The five-time champions had a rocky start to the season but have turned things around impressively. They currently sit fourth on the table with 14 points from 12 games, and a healthy net run rate of +1.156.
Mumbai Indians are still waiting for clarity on three other overseas players – South Africa’s Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch, and England’s Will Jacks. On Tuesday, Cricket South Africa confirmed that the NOCs granted to their IPL-bound players were valid only until May 25, the tournament’s original end date. Since both Rickelton and Bosch are part of South Africa’s squad for the World Test Championship final against Australia in June, they’re expected to report for duty by the end of the month.
As for Will Jacks, the ECB has reportedly asked its players to be back in time for England’s ODI series against the West Indies, starting May 29. So, while Boult’s return is great news for MI, the uncertainty over other key overseas names means the team might still need to adapt on the go. Either way, their next few games are going to be crucial – and having a bowler like Boult leading the charge certainly doesn’t hurt.
