Even though Chennai Super Kings are having one of their toughest seasons in recent memory, Anil Kumble believes there’s real hope for the future — and it centers around one young star: Dewald Brevis.
Speaking on JioHotstar, Kumble didn’t hold back his praise for the South African talent, highlighting just how impressive Brevis has been during a rough campaign for CSK. "His ability to play spin really stood out. Chennai isn’t easy. It’s a two-paced wicket where the odd ball holds up," Kumble said. "He’s done it before in South Africa, in first-class cricket, and at the U-19 level, which is how he came into the IPL."
Brevis’ story this season is remarkable in itself. He wasn’t even originally part of the CSK squad — he came in mid-season as an injury replacement — and has made an instant impact. Kumble even compared Brevis' situation to Chris Gayle’s unforgettable arrival at RCB in 2011, saying, "He came in as a replacement, wasn’t even part of the squad originally, and that reminds me of how one ‘Universe Boss’ too walked in as a replacement and became an icon."
That’s not a comparison Kumble would make lightly. He spoke highly of Brevis’ range of shots, calmness under pressure, and ability to handle tricky pitches like Chennai’s — traits that he feels CSK must now build around. "Brevis has all the shots. With Rachin Ravindra, Mhatre, and Pathirana, CSK has a young core to build on. Brevis has the potential to be a long-term asset for the franchise."
Brevis showed a glimpse of that promise recently, smashing four sixes in a brilliant knock, including three in a single over off Kamindu Mendis. For a CSK side desperately needing a spark, especially with their batting struggles, Brevis' performance at Chepauk is a rare and much-needed bright spot. Kumble also pointed out a big shift happening at CSK — a franchise long known for relying on experienced veterans is now starting to put its faith in a new generation. And at just 21, Brevis could very well be at the heart of CSK’s next chapter.
