BCCI Fines Hardik Pandya and Shreyas Iyer After Slow Over-Rate in Qualifier 2

The BCCI didn’t hold back after a high-stakes Qualifier 2 clash in Ahmedabad, as both captains—Shreyas Iyer of Punjab Kings and Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians—were slapped with hefty fines for maintaining a slow over-rate.

It’s the second time this season that PBKS have been pulled up for not keeping up with the clock, which meant skipper Shreyas Iyer was fined INR 24 lakh. The rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, won’t go scot-free either—they’ve each been charged either INR 6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fee, whichever is lower.

“As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 24 lakhs,” the BCCI said in a statement. “The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser,” the statement added.

Things were even costlier for Hardik Pandya and Mumbai Indians. This was MI’s third slow-over rate offence in IPL 2025, and the BCCI came down even harder this time. Hardik has been fined a whopping INR 30 lakh—the biggest fine any captain has faced this season. As for the rest of the squad, they’ll have to cough up either INR 12 lakh or 50 percent of their match fee.

While the off-field penalties made headlines, the on-field result was just as dramatic. Punjab Kings pulled off a brilliant chase under pressure, overhauling Mumbai Indians’ 204-run target with five wickets in hand and six balls to spare. The win has booked their place in the IPL 2025 final, where they’ll take on Royal Challengers Bangalore.

It’s been a long wait for PBKS fans—over a decade without a final—but under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, who just last year lifted the trophy with KKR, the team looks charged and ready. The final will be held at the same venue—the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad—on Tuesday, June 3. All eyes now turn to what could be a history-making final, as neither PBKS nor RCB have ever won the IPL. For one of them, that wait is finally going to end.
