Big conversations are underway about something that hasn’t been seen in more than a century — a Great Britain cricket team competing at the Olympics. With cricket officially returning to the Games at Los Angeles 2028, plans are in motion to bring together players from England, Scotland, and potentially other home nations to form a Team GB cricket side.
It’s a big deal. Cricket hasn’t featured in the Olympics since 1900, when Great Britain beat France in what turned out to be a one-off match. That moment is now poised to be revived in a modern format, with six-team men’s and women’s T20 tournaments set to take place at LA28. Each squad will be allowed to name up to 15 players.
Cricket Scotland’s CEO Trudy Lindblade confirmed that early talks are going well between them and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). “We’re in the process of establishing a Team GB cricket entity, which is essential for competing under the British Olympic Association,” Lindblade said while speaking to BBC Radio 4. She called it an “exciting opportunity,” though there’s still a lot to sort out in terms of qualification and selection. But the collaboration between cricketing bodies, the IOC, and the LA 2028 organizers is in full swing.
The ECB is also on board and expressed enthusiasm for the idea, pointing out how LA 2028 adds to an already packed cricket calendar — England and Wales are also due to host the ICC World Cups in 2026 and 2030. “LA 2028 offers another chance to grow the game and inspire new audiences,” a spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo.
The idea of Team GB coming together for cricket might sound unusual, but it’s not without precedent. Other sports like football, golf, and rugby have done it in previous Olympic cycles. British Olympic Association CEO Andy Anson highlighted that very point: “We’ve seen how England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland can come together. Cricket will follow that model, with the ECB at the core.” The countdown to the LA Olympics is on, with the Games scheduled from July 14 to 30 in 2028 — and if everything goes to plan, cricket fans could be in for something truly historic.
