Heinrich Klaasen Announces Retirement from International Cricket

In a move that caught many by surprise, South African power-hitter Heinrich Klaasen has called time on his international career at the age of 33. Klassen announced on Monday that he’s stepping away from international cricket with immediate effect.

Klaasen recently wrapped up his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, where he continued to show just how dangerous he can be with the bat. But now, after 122 matches in South African colors — including four Tests, 60 ODIs, and 58 T20Is — Klaasen has decided to walk away from the international stage.

In an emotional post on Instagram, Klaasen admitted that the decision wasn’t easy, but one he made with a clear conscience. “It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket. It took me a long time to decide what’s best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision but also one that I have absolute peace with,” he wrote. Klaasen went on to reflect on the pride he felt every time he wore the South African jersey. “From the first day, it was the biggest privilege representing my country and it was everything that I have worked for and dreamed about as a young boy.”

While the announcement has shocked fans, especially coming on the heels of Glenn Maxwell’s ODI retirement, Klaasen made it clear that his main reason was personal. The grind of international cricket had taken its toll, and now, he wants to spend more quality time with his family. “I look forward to spending more time with my family as this decision will allow me to do so,” he added.

As he steps away from the international spotlight, there’s no doubt Klaasen still has plenty to offer in franchise cricket. But for now, one of South Africa’s most entertaining modern-day cricketers has decided it’s time to hang up the Proteas jersey — and focus on the next chapter of his life.
