Jasprit Bumrah became Mumbai Indians’ all-time leading wicket-taker during their emphatic 54-run win over Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium. Bumrah reached the milestone by dismissing LSG opener Aiden Markram early in the innings.
With that wicket, he went past his long-time mentor Lasith Malinga to claim the top spot. What makes it even more special is that both Bumrah and Malinga have spent their entire IPL careers representing only Mumbai Indians. Malinga, who retired with an incredible 170 wickets from 122 matches at an astonishing average of 19.79, had held the record for years. But now, it’s Bumrah leading the way with 171 wickets in MI colors. Harbhajan Singh, with 127 wickets, is the only other player in Mumbai’s history to have crossed the 100-wicket mark in the IPL.
Bumrah’s feat also puts him second for the most wickets taken for a single franchise in IPL history, overtaking Malinga. Only Sunil Narine, with 187 wickets for Kolkata Knight Riders, is ahead of him now. According to ESPNcricinfo, Bumrah is also the only Mumbai Indians bowler to have picked up multiple five-wicket hauls in the IPL. His best performance came back in 2022, when he grabbed a sensational 5 for 10 against Kolkata Knight Riders — even though MI ended up losing that game by 52 runs.
As for the game, Bumrah was once again at his best, finishing with impressive figures of 4 for 22 and taking his overall IPL wicket tally to 174. He turned the game firmly in Mumbai’s favor with a stunning 16th over, where he picked up three wickets and crushed any remaining hopes Lucknow had of chasing down the target.
Ayush Badoni was the lone bright spot for the Super Giants, top-scoring with a quick 35 off 22 balls, but he didn’t get enough support from the other end. Lucknow eventually folded for 161 while chasing a massive 216. Mumbai’s bowlers kept the pressure on all innings, picking up wickets at regular intervals. Trent Boult chipped in with an excellent 3 for 20, while Will Jacks also made his mark with 2 for 18.
