Jos Buttler Joins Elite 4000-Run IPL Club

Jos Buttler just keeps hitting milestones for fun. After recently breezing past the 12,500-run mark in T20 cricket, the England star has now notched up another major landmark — 4,000 IPL runs. He reached the milestone during Match 51 of the IPL 2025 season, playing for Gujarat Titans against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Coming into the game, Buttler needed just 12 runs to get to the 4,000 mark in the IPL. He walked in with the Titans cruising at 87 for 1 and put on a show yet again. He added 62 runs with Shubman Gill, who played a superb knock of 76, and then stitched another 57-run stand with Washington Sundar. Buttler was dropped by Pat Cummins in the 12th over, but the Aussie made up for it by dismissing him in the 19th.

By then, Buttler had already done the damage — a fluent 64 off 37 balls, another feather in his already stacked cap. According to IPL records, he's now the third-fastest player to score 4,000 IPL runs in terms of balls faced. Only Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers got there quicker than Buttler, who reached it in 2,677 deliveries. Right behind him are Suryakumar Yadav and David Warner.

Buttler’s IPL journey began with Mumbai Indians, where he played 24 games and scored 527 runs at an average of just over 25. He managed a single fifty during that stint, but his strike rate — a blazing 145-plus — hinted at what was to come. It was his move to Rajasthan Royals that truly unlocked his potential. In 83 matches for the Royals, Buttler piled up 3,055 runs at a phenomenal average of 41.84, including 18 fifties and 7 centuries.

After being released by RR ahead of the 2025 mega auction, Buttler went under the hammer with a base price of ₹2 crore. Gujarat Titans weren’t messing around — they went all in and bagged him for a massive ₹15.75 crore. And he's made every rupee count. In his first season with GT, he’s already racked up more than 450 runs, rubbing salt into Rajasthan’s wounds.

Overall, Buttler now has 4,052 IPL runs from 116 innings in 117 matches, at an average above 40 and a strike rate pushing 150. He’s scored 7 centuries, 24 half-centuries, and after this latest innings, he’s also passed the 400-boundary mark — sitting at 401 fours. Buttler has always been a box-office player. This season, he’s proving he's worth every bit of the hype — and the price tag. Josh Buttler  5th overseas player to crossed 4000 runs milestone.
