Rajeev Shukla Set to Step In as BCCI Interim President with Roger Binny Nearing Retirement

Change is on the horizon at the BCCI, with Roger Binny’s tenure as president set to end this July. The 1983 World Cup-winning all-rounder will turn 70 on July 19, and under the board’s constitution, that means his time in office is up. As per BCCI rules, no one can continue as an office-bearer once they hit the age of 70.

With Binny approaching that age limit, current vice-president Rajeev Shukla is expected to take over the reins — at least temporarily. The rules are pretty clear: “The vice-president shall officiate in the president’s absence when the president is unavailable.” That clause sets up Shukla for a stint as interim president until the BCCI elections scheduled for September. This isn’t the first time the board has had to navigate an unexpected transition. Just last year, when Jay Shah became chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), he had to vacate his role as BCCI secretary. Devajit Saikia, then joint secretary, stepped in until the election for the new secretary was held.

As for Shukla, he’s no stranger to the inner workings of Indian cricket. The 65-year-old has been a part of the BCCI for decades, known as someone who has worn multiple hats in Indian cricket administration. From journalist to IPL chairman between 2011 and 2017, and now vice-president (a post he won unopposed in 2020 and again in 2022), Shukla has long been considered a steady hand in the boardroom.

Binny, on the other hand, has had a storied cricket career. A key member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning squad, he finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 18 scalps. In his playing days, he turned out for India in 27 Tests and 72 ODIs between 1979 and 1987. He took over as BCCI president in 2022, succeeding former captain Sourav Ganguly, and was elected unopposed.

Binny’s impending exit might be due to the age cap, but it also marks the end of a chapter led by one of Indian cricket’s World Cup heroes. With Shukla stepping up, attention will now shift to what’s next — and who will officially take over the top job once elections roll around in September.
