Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant has been slapped with a fine after his side was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during their heavy defeat against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede on Sunday.
Pant was fined INR 24 lakhs, as this was LSG’s second slow over-rate offence of IPL 2025. Meanwhile, the rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each fined "either INR 6 lakhs or 25% of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser," according to the tournament's code of conduct. It was a rough afternoon for LSG, who chose to bowl first under the scorching sun but simply couldn’t keep Mumbai in check. The hosts piled up a massive 215 for 7 in their 20 overs. In reply, LSG were bundled out for 161, falling to a 54-run defeat.
It was an even tougher day for Pant personally. The left-hander managed just 4 runs off 2 balls, continuing a frustrating season where he’s scored only 110 runs from nine innings at a strike rate of 98.21. The loss left Lucknow stuck on 10 points from 10 matches, while Mumbai Indians surged to third place with 12 points after racking up their fifth win in a row.
Pant isn’t the only captain to face the heat for slow over-rates this season. Shubman Gill (GT), Axar Patel (DC), Sanju Samson (RR), Rajat Patidar (RCB), Riyan Parag (RR), and Hardik Pandya (MI) have also been fined. But unlike last season, the IPL has scrapped the rule that banned captains after multiple slow over-rate breaches. Instead, the league has introduced a system of fines, demerit points, and in-game penalties to deal with the issue.
