Sai Sudharsan Becomes Fastest Indian to Reach 2000 T20 Runs

Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudharsan hit a major career milestone on Friday night during their IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Ahmedabad, becoming the second-fastest player in T20 history to reach 2000 runs.

He got there when he crossed the 32-run mark in his innings at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Only Australia’s Shaun Marsh has gotten to 2000 T20 runs quicker — doing it in 53 innings, just one less than Sudharsan’s 54. That’s elite company. And in doing so, the 23-year-old from Tamil Nadu broke a long-standing record held by none other than Sachin Tendulkar. Sudharsan is now the fastest Indian to reach 2000 T20 runs, beating Tendulkar’s mark of 59 innings. For context, the Master Blaster had reached that milestone back in 2011, five years after making his T20 debut for India against South Africa.

This isn’t Sudharsan’s first record-breaking moment either. Just last season, he became the fastest Indian to 1000 IPL runs — getting there in only 25 innings. That effort edged out the previous Indian benchmark of 31 innings, jointly held by Tendulkar and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Tendulkar achieved the feat in 2010, while Gaikwad matched it in 2022.

Sudharsan also reached 1000 runs in all T20s during last season’s game against Mumbai Indians, making him the third-fastest Indian to get there. Only Devdutt Padikkal (25 innings), Rohan Kadam (27), and Tendulkar (31) got there faster. Globally, Sudharsan now joins an elite list. After Marsh (53) and ahead of names like Brad Hodge, Marcus Trescothick, and Muhammad Waseem — all of whom needed 58 innings — he now sits in rare air.

Here's how the list stacks up:

  • 53 innings – Shaun Marsh
  • 54 innings – Sai Sudharsan
  • 58 innings – Brad Hodge, Marcus Trescothick, Muhammad Waseem
  • 59 innings – Sachin Tendulkar, D’Arcy Short

At just 23, Sudharsan’s T20 journey is only getting started, but he’s already rewriting the record books. And if this form continues, there are plenty more milestones waiting for him just around the corner.
