It was a night to forget for Sanju Samson and the Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday. Not only did they suffer a heavy 58-run defeat to Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, but Samson also found himself in hot water with the BCCI. The Royals skipper has been hit with a hefty fine of Rs 24 lakh after his side was found guilty of a slow over-rate during GT’s batting innings — where they piled on a daunting 217/6 in their 20 overs.
This marks Rajasthan's second such offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate regulations. The earlier infraction came during their home fixture against Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati — a match where Riyan Parag had stepped in as captain due to Samson’s injury. For that first offence, Parag was docked Rs 12 lakh.
As per the IPL’s statement, “The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 percent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.”
Samson did try to salvage the night with a fighting 40 during Rajasthan’s chase, but it wasn’t enough to steady a sinking ship. The rest of the top-order simply didn’t turn up, and the Royals’ innings unraveled quickly. In fact, they were bowled out for the first time since IPL 2023 — a stark reminder of how badly things went off track.
Despite RR poor batting performance, it was Sai Sudharsan who did most of the damage for Gujarat, cracking a classy 82 that powered GT to their fourth straight win and helped them climb to the top of the points table.
