Suryakumar Yadav Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s 15-Year Record During MI's Loss to PBKS

Suryakumar Yadav is in the form of his life—and he's making it count. For the second time in his IPL career, the Mumbai Indians star has smashed through the 600-run barrier in a single season. The first time was back in 2023, when MI reached Qualifier 2. Two years on, SKY has gone even bigger. Not only has he helped Mumbai reach the knockouts again, but he’s also delivered a season for the ages—leaving even the great Sachin Tendulkar behind in the history books.

SKY becomes the highest run-scorer for Mumbai Indians in a single IPL season

The milestone moment came during Mumbai’s final league game of the season against Punjab Kings at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. On his way to a composed half-century—his fifth of the season—Suryakumar became the highest run-scorer for Mumbai Indians in a single IPL season. He overtook Tendulkar’s long-standing record of 618 runs from the 2010 campaign, a mark that had stood unchallenged for 15 years.

Now, with 640 runs in 14 matches at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 168.54, Suryakumar is enjoying his most dominant IPL season yet. That number already beats his previous best of 605 runs in 2023. And with MI into the playoffs, he has a golden chance to go where no Mumbai batter has gone before—cross the 700-run mark in a single season. If he gets there, he’ll become only the third Indian to do it, after Virat Kohli (2016 and 2024) and Shubman Gill (2023).

Other records also come tumbling down

With a neat slice through point off Kyle Jamieson in the ninth over of the innings, Surya hit a boundary that brought up another personal milestone. That shot marked his 14th consecutive score of 25 or more in T20s, the most by any batter in the format’s history. He broke the previous record held by South Africa’s Temba Bavuma, who had 13 in a row. It also gave him yet another IPL record: most 25+ scores in a single season. With 14 scores of 25 or more, Suryakumar now sits ahead of both Kane Williamson and Shubman Gill, who each managed 13 in their best seasons.

What makes this even more special is the way he’s done it—with flair, consistency, and pressure-defying calm. He’s not just piling on runs; he’s doing it when it matters most. And now, with MI chasing another title, SKY could still have a few more masterclasses left up his sleeve.
