Umran Malik has officially linked up with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during the ongoing IPL 2025 season, but not in the way fans might have hoped. Instead of making fiery appearances with the ball, the 25-year-old will be focusing on his recovery as part of KKR’s "return to cricket" program.
Umran was snapped up by KKR during the IPL 2025 mega auction after Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) decided not to retain him. However, an untimely injury ruled him out of action for the season. Now, rather than sitting idle, he’s joined the KKR setup to continue his rehabilitation under the watchful eyes of the team's medical and support staff.
It’s been a tricky road for Umran since his breakout season with SRH back in 2021, when his sheer pace turned heads across the cricketing world. His performances earned him a BCCI central contract and even a handful of games for India in white-ball cricket. But inconsistency, coupled with recurring fitness issues, made it tough for him to cement a spot in the national side. His last appearance for India dates back to 2023.
While his early days with SRH showed promise, the relationship didn’t blossom into a long-term success. Ahead of the 2025 season, SRH chose not to retain the pacer, opening the door for KKR to bring him in. Across his IPL journey so far, Umran has played 26 matches, with his only full season coming in 2022.
On Friday, April 25, KKR confirmed via their social media channels that Umran would be joining the squad for rehabilitation purposes. Though he won’t be seen steaming in with the new ball this season, the sight of him working with the team is a reminder that the franchise still believes he has a bright future — once he’s back to full fitness.
