Claudio Ranieri Turns Down Italy Job, FIGC Eyes Stefano Pioli as Spalletti’s Successor

Claudio Ranieri has said no to the chance of managing Italy, turning down an offer from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) because he wasn’t sold on balancing the national team job with his advisory role at Roma.

The FIGC had been scrambling for a new manager after sacking Luciano Spalletti last week following Italy’s 3-0 loss to Norway. Spalletti, who broke the news himself on Sunday, still oversaw Monday’s match against Moldova before officially stepping aside.

FIGC president Gabriele Gravina had been in serious talks with Ranieri, hoping to convince the 73-year-old to take over. The federation even proposed a unique dual role—head coach of Italy and a future position as technical director for the national teams. But despite their efforts, Ranieri, who recently became an advisor to Roma owner Dan Friedkin after a brief stint as the club’s manager, decided against it. Friedkin had given his blessing for Ranieri to take the Italy job if he wanted, but in the end, the former Leicester City boss chose to stay put.

"I’d like to thank president Gravina for the opportunity—it was a great honor," Ranieri told ANSA. "But after thinking it over, I’ve decided to remain fully committed to my new role at Roma. The Friedkins supported me completely, whatever I chose, but this was my decision alone."

With Ranieri out of the picture, the FIGC must now look elsewhere. Stefano Pioli is emerging as the leading candidate—even though he’s already held talks with Fiorentina. However, barring any last-minute surprises, Pioli could soon be handed the reins. Italy’s next match is a World Cup qualifier against Estonia on September 5 in Bergamo. So, for now, the Azzurri are still searching for the right man to lead them forward.
