In one of the more unexpected turns of the summer, Leroy Sané is on his way to Galatasaray. The Bayern Munich winger, who had several big-name clubs circling, has reportedly agreed to join the Turkish giants in a deal few saw coming.
Sané, 29, had been in talks with Bayern about a contract extension, but with his current deal expiring at the end of this month, he’s decided to walk away as a free agent. While speculation ran wild about a possible reunion with Mikel Arteta at Arsenal — where the two crossed paths at Manchester City — Galatasaray swooped in with an irresistible offer.
According to reports from The Athletic, senior figures at Arsenal had indeed held discussions with Sané, and interest from Al Hilal, Fenerbahce, and other English clubs wasn’t lacking either. But in the end, it was Galatasaray’s lucrative offer — a three-year deal worth up to €15 million a year — that sealed the deal. That’s around £475,000 a week, a figure Arsenal weren’t willing to touch, especially given the complications around the Premier League’s tax structures.
Sané originally joined Bayern in 2020 after four seasons with Manchester City, where he won two Premier League titles under Pep Guardiola. His move back to the Bundesliga from City cost Bayern €49 million with €11 million in potential add-ons. Over his five years at Bayern, Sané worked under four different managers — Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel, and most recently, Vincent Kompany. Across 220 appearances, he notched 61 goals and 55 assists, showing consistent impact even when not always starting. Last season, he managed 13 goals and six assists in 45 appearances, though only 25 of those came from the starting XI.
Now, with Bayern preparing for the Club World Cup in the U.S., Sané won’t be part of the squad — a clear signal that his time with the club is officially over. It’s a fresh chapter for the German international, and Galatasaray will be hoping his experience and star power can boost their European ambitions next season. For Sané, it’s a bold move. And for Galatasaray, it’s a statement signing.
