Luka Modrić is getting ready for one final dance in European football — and it’s going to be in the iconic red and black of AC Milan. The 39-year-old Croatian maestro will join the Serie A giants after the Club World Cup in the US, bringing an end to a glittering 12-year spell at Real Madrid.
Although his exit is confirmed, Modrić has still been named in Real’s squad for the revamped Club World Cup by new manager — and former teammate — Xabi Alonso. Madrid kick off their campaign on June 18 in Miami against Al-Hilal, with matches against Pachuca and RB Salzburg to follow, and the final scheduled for July 13. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano shared the update on Modrić’s next move, saying, “Luka Modrić to undergo medical and complete formal steps of AC Milan move after the Club World Cup. No signature/official steps before that as Modrić wants to focus on Real Madrid at the best level possible until the end.”
Plenty of clubs were keen to snap up Modrić, including sides from Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer, but the midfield legend opted to stay in Europe — and it’s AC Milan who have won the race. The timing couldn’t be better for the Rossoneri. With Tijjani Reijnders set for a move to Manchester City, Milan were in urgent need of a steady, experienced presence in midfield. And who better than a Ballon d'Or winner who still hasn’t slowed down? Modrić featured in 57 games for club and country during the 2024–25 season, proving that even at 39, he’s far from finished.
For Milan, it’s more than just a short-term fix. They’re getting a player who has been there and done it all — five Champions League titles, three La Liga crowns, and a World Cup runners-up medal with Croatia. His arrival would not only plug a crucial gap but also bring unmatched experience to a side in transition.
Modrić, who moved to Real Madrid from Spurs back in 2012, has made 591 appearances in white — a club legend by every definition. But now, he’s turning the page. With one last Club World Cup to conquer alongside Real Madrid, Modrić will be looking to sign off with another piece of silverware. After that, it’s Milan calling — and the San Siro faithful will be counting down the days.
