Paul Pogba might be on the brink of a remarkable return to football, with AS Monaco reportedly closing in on a deal to bring the former World Cup winner back to Ligue 1. After more than a year out of the game, the 32-year-old Frenchman looks set to restart his career.
According to multiple sources, including ESPN and Fabrizio Romano, Pogba is deep in discussions with Monaco over a free transfer. Romano was the first to break the news, posting on X: "AS Monaco have offered a two-year contract to Paul Pogba with talks underway. Negotiations and discussions over project continue this weekend to try reach an agreement." If it goes through, it would mark Pogba’s first club stint in France since he left Le Havre as a teenager to join Manchester United back in 2009.

Pogba’s career has been in limbo since September 2023, when he was handed a four-year ban for testing positive for elevated levels of testosterone while at Juventus. That ban was later reduced to 18 months after he successfully appealed, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling that he had unknowingly taken DHEA, a banned substance often used to boost testosterone levels. Following the ban, Juventus and Pogba parted ways by mutual consent in November 2023. Since then, he’s stayed out of the spotlight, focusing on his recovery and staying in shape, occasionally sharing clips from his workouts on social media to show he’s serious about getting back.
His suspension officially ended in March, and ever since, there’s been growing chatter about where he might land next. Monaco now looks like the front-runner, and it makes perfect sense for both sides. For Pogba, a move back to France brings his journey full circle and offers him the chance to reset his career in a familiar setting. For Monaco, it’s a calculated gamble on a player who, despite the controversies, has always had the kind of talent that can change a game in a heartbeat.
Pogba last played a competitive match on September 3, 2023, in Juventus' 2-0 win over Empoli. A return to top-level football after such a long absence would be a huge moment, not just for the player but for the sport in general. Love him or loathe him, Pogba’s presence brings attention, drama, and excitement – and his comeback could make for one of the most intriguing storylines in European football this year.
