Cristiano Ronaldo was overwhelmed with emotion as Portugal edged out Spain 5-3 on penalties to lift the UEFA Nations League title in a dramatic final at the Allianz Arena in Munich. The 39-year-old legend had found the net during regular time to help Portugal claw back into the game, which ended 2-2 after 90 minutes of high-intensity football.
Much of the build-up was centered around Ronaldo and Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal — a potential passing of the torch. But when the match reached its nail-biting climax, both stars were off the pitch, watching the drama unfold from the sidelines. Ronaldo, in particular, had to be substituted in the 88th minute after suffering a muscle strain.
With the tension sky-high during the shootout, it was Diogo Costa who came up big — saving Alvaro Morata’s penalty to set the stage for Rúben Neves, who calmly slotted home the winner. As Neves’ shot hit the back of the net, Ronaldo sprinted onto the pitch, fists pumping — before the emotions took over. The tears flowed as he embraced teammates and soaked in what was his third international title: adding to the 2016 Euros and the first-ever Nations League crown in 2019.
It was a full-circle moment for Ronaldo, who had also watched the 2016 final from the bench due to injury. Once again, he couldn't finish the match — but once again, he was there when Portugal lifted the trophy. Following the final whistle, Ronaldo explained the gravitas of Portugal’s win in a post-match interview. He said, “I have many titles with my clubs, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal. These are tears. It’s mission accomplished and so much joy.”
With another piece of silverware in the bag, the question many are asking is: what now? Will the next World Cup in 2026 feature one last dance from Ronaldo, who will be 41 by then?
After the match, he gave the strongest clue yet about his plans: "You know how old I am already. Obviously, I'm closer to the end than I was at the beginning, but I have to enjoy every moment. If I don't get seriously injured, I'll keep going," he told reporters, leaving the door wide open for more. But for now, though, he has earned the right to bask in yet another moment of glory — and Portugal fans will be dreaming there’s still more to come.
