Tottenham Hotspur could soon have a new man in the dugout, with Brentford boss Thomas Frank emerging as the frontrunner to replace Ange Postecoglou.
Just over two weeks after guiding Spurs to a long-awaited trophy — a gritty 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final — Postecoglou was shown the door. Despite ending the club’s 17-year silverware drought, he couldn’t survive what turned out to be their worst-ever Premier League campaign. Spurs lost 22 league games — more than any side that avoided relegation — and limped to a 17th-place finish.
Now, attention has turned to Frank, who has been quietly impressive at Brentford. He’s reportedly open to making the move across London and is keen to bring some of his coaching staff with him. Spurs are expected to enter negotiations with Brentford over compensation, and while Frank’s contract contains a release clause believed to be over £10 million ($13.5 million), there’s hope the two clubs can settle on a figure. One source told ESPN there’s “optimism” that a deal can be done soon.
Thomas Frank initially joined Brentford as an assistant coach in 2016 before taking over as head coach in 2018 when Dean Smith departed for Aston Villa. However, his early days at the helm were challenging, with the team losing eight of his first ten matches in charge. But the Danish coach eventually found his footing and guided Brentford to an 11th-place finish in the 2018-19 season. In his first full campaign as manager, Frank led the Bees to the Championship play-off final, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to Fulham after extra time. Undeterred, Brentford returned to Wembley the very next season and clinched promotion to the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Swansea City.
Since then, Frank has turned the Bees into a well-drilled, hard-to-beat Premier League side. Despite regularly losing key players, he’s managed to keep Brentford punching above their weight with finishes of 13th, ninth, 16th, and 10th in the last four seasons. That consistency, coupled with his malleable style of football and player development track record, makes him an appealing candidate for Spurs as they try to steady the ship. The next few days could be crucial as Spurs look to close in on their next manager.
